Sparky
Our Methodology

Transparent pricing data for Australian homeowners

Sparky helps homeowners make informed decisions about trade work through transparent, regularly updated pricing data. We combine licensed trade surveys, regional analysis, and community-reported costs so you can evaluate quotes with confidence.

How We Collect Data

Our five-step methodology for Australian trade pricing

1

Trade surveys

Baseline pricing from licensed tradespeople across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.

2

Regional multipliers

Sydney metro is the baseline. Other cities are adjusted for local labour markets, material logistics, and trade pool size.

3

Property age brackets

Four brackets (Pre-1970, 1970-1990, 1990-2010, Post-2010) capture the cost impact of older wiring, plumbing, asbestos remediation, and legacy materials.

4

GST-inclusive pricing

All published prices include GST. No hidden tax surprises.

5

Community validation

Real homeowner-reported costs curated from Whirlpool, Reddit, OzBargain, Airtasker, and ProductReview. Outliers are filtered and each quote is classified by scope of work.

What Our Guides Cover

Price ranges by city

Sydney metro baseline with regional adjustments for Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. Ranges reflect typical residential jobs from simple to complex.

Brands, materials, and standards

Named Australian brands with per-unit prices, material comparison tables, and relevant Australian Standards (AS/NZS) with specific clause references.

Local hiring advice

State licensing requirements, compliance certificates to request, suburb-specific cost factors, and what to look for when choosing a tradesperson.

Our Standards

How we maintain data integrity and editorial independence

Transparent methodology

We publish how we collect, adjust, and present pricing data. Our methodology is open so you can evaluate the numbers yourself.

Regular updates

Pricing data is reviewed and updated to reflect current market rates, new government rebate programs, and changes to Australian Standards.

Community-sourced validation

Real homeowner-reported costs are presented alongside survey data with median and percentile statistics. Community data is licensed under CC BY 4.0.

No sponsored content

No pay-to-play listings, no affiliate rankings, no sponsored recommendations. Our guides exist to inform homeowners, not to sell leads.

Important Limitations

What our data can and cannot tell you

All figures are estimates, not binding quotes. Final pricing depends on your specific property, site conditions, and the tradesperson you hire.

Regional variation exists beyond the five cities we cover. Rural and remote areas may see higher costs due to travel and material logistics.

Prices change over time as material costs, labour rates, and regulations evolve. Check the last-updated date on each guide.

Always get multiple quotes from licensed tradespeople before committing to any work. Our guides help you evaluate those quotes, not replace them.
