What's Included in the Price
- Surface preparation (cleaning, slab levelling, drainage fall correction if needed)
- Supply and installation of outdoor-rated tiles to AS 3958 with minimum 90% adhesive back-butter coverage
- Slip-resistant tiles meeting AS 4586 ratings (P3/R10 minimum for general outdoor, P4/R11 with Class B barefoot rating for pool surrounds)
- Flexible polymer-modified adhesive rated for external use and thermal cycling
- Cutting at edges, steps, and around drainage points
- Movement joints at 4.5m maximum intervals (critical in Brisbane's temperature range)
- UV-stable outdoor-rated grouting and silicone
- Cleanup and waste disposal
Materials (tiles, adhesive, grout) typically account for 40–50% of the cost. Labour makes up the rest, scaling with area size, pool compliance work, and the number of cuts for edges and steps.
What Affects the Cost
- Area size. Brisbane entertaining areas are generous. A covered patio of 30–50m2 is standard in suburban homes. Add a pool surround and total tiled area reaches 60–100m2 or more. Labour per square metre drops on larger areas, with rates of $50–$85/m2 for standard patios and $85–$150/m2 for pool surrounds.
- Pool surround compliance. Pool tiling is very common in Brisbane. Surrounds must use P4/R11 rated tiles with a Class B barefoot classification under AS 4586. Your tiler should verify both ratings before purchasing tiles. Pool coping, waterproofing coordination, and chemical-resistant grout add to the total.
- Tile colour and UV stability. In Brisbane's subtropical sun, dark-coloured tiles absorb heat and can reach over 60 degrees Celsius in direct exposure. Light porcelain pavers in cream, sand, or light grey ($40–$110/m2 supply) stay significantly cooler and resist UV fading. Grout also degrades under UV. Epoxy or polymer-modified grout holds colour and bond longer than standard cement grout in Queensland conditions.
- Tile type. Porcelain pavers are the go-to for Brisbane: durable, no sealing required, wide range of slip ratings, and inherently UV-stable. Natural stone (travertine at $49–$120/m2, sandstone at $25–$60/m2) suits premium properties but needs sealing every one to two years and can stain from pool chemicals or leaf tannins.
- Slab condition and fall. Brisbane slabs on sandy and alluvial soils are generally stable and in good condition. Drainage fall still needs checking, as standing water on a flat tiled surface grows algae within days in Brisbane's humidity, becoming a slip hazard. Correction runs $40–$75/m2 if needed.
- Steps and coping. Pool coping, patio steps, and level changes between the house and outdoor area add cutting and finishing time. Bullnose or capping tiles for edges add $15–$30 per lineal metre.
A small covered patio retile in a Springfield home with light porcelain pavers on a flat slab sits toward $1,800. A large pool surround and entertaining area in an Ascot home with travertine, slab correction, steps, pool coping, UV-stable epoxy grout, and waterproofing coordination pushes toward $10,800.
Brisbane-Specific Considerations
Brisbane's outdoor tiling demand is driven by climate and lifestyle. In a city where the entertaining area often sees more use than the living room, outdoor tiles are a functional surface, not an aesthetic luxury.
Pool tiling is a core job category. Brisbane has one of the highest pool ownership rates in Australia. Pool surround tiling is a bread-and-butter job for local tilers, meaning experience and availability are strong. The compliance requirement is clear: pool surrounds must meet P4/R11 under AS 4586 with a Class B barefoot rating. Tiles at this level have a textured surface that provides grip when wet and barefoot. A good tiler will tell you the exact P-rating and barefoot classification of every tile before you commit.
UV and heat dictate tile colour. Direct Queensland sun hitting outdoor tiles from October through March is intense. Dark tiles in uncovered areas can reach temperatures painful to walk on barefoot. Light-coloured porcelain pavers (cream, sand, light grey) stay measurably cooler and do not fade as quickly. This is a functional decision, not just an aesthetic one, particularly around pools where people walk barefoot. When choosing tiles at a showroom, ask whether the display tiles are rated for outdoor UV exposure, as some ranges are indoor-only.
Subtropical moisture and algae. Brisbane's humidity means water lingers on outdoor surfaces longer than in drier cities. Correct drainage fall (minimum 1:100 away from the house) is not just about preventing puddles; standing water on a flat tiled surface grows algae quickly and becomes a slip hazard. In shaded areas under trees or pergolas, algae growth is even faster. Anti-slip tiles with a textured surface are easier to clean and resist algae buildup better than smooth finishes.
Indoor-outdoor transitions. Many Brisbane homes, particularly in suburbs like Paddington, New Farm, and Bulimba, tile from the living area through sliding doors to the patio. At this threshold, tiles must change from indoor-rated to outdoor-rated with higher slip resistance. The tiler needs to manage the height transition, the change in fall direction, and the expansion joint at the doorway. Getting this detail right avoids water running back into the house during summer storms.
Growth corridor entertaining areas. Springfield, North Lakes, Redbank Plains, and Coomera. Large alfresco areas on new concrete slabs with generally good condition and correct fall. These are straightforward outdoor tiling jobs that sit toward the lower end of the range, with stable soils and easy access keeping preparation costs minimal.
Hiring a Licensed Tiler in QLD
In Queensland, tiling work over $3,300 (including GST) requires a QBCC licence. Most outdoor and pool tiling jobs exceed this threshold. Verify the licence on the QBCC licensee register before signing a contract.
Before hiring:
- Ask for the AS 4586 slip rating and barefoot classification of the tiles they recommend
- Confirm they will use UV-stable outdoor-rated grout (epoxy or polymer-modified), not standard cement grout
- Confirm they will install movement joints per AS 3958 at 4.5m maximum intervals
- For pool work, confirm experience with pool surround tiling and coordination with pool builders on coping and waterproofing
Worth checking:
- A good tiler will recommend light-coloured tiles for sun-exposed areas and explain why
- They will confirm drainage fall before starting, or quote to correct it
- They will specify outdoor-rated flexible adhesive and UV-stable grout
- For pool surrounds, they will explain the P4/R11 and Class B barefoot requirements without being asked
How We Calculate
Estimates are based on surveyed trade rates for licensed tilers in the Brisbane metro area, adjusted for property type and outdoor area size. All prices include GST. Pool construction, waterproofing below the tile surface, and landscaping are separate costs.
