What's Included in the Price
- Surface preparation (cleaning, slab levelling, drainage fall correction if needed)
- Supply and installation of outdoor-rated tiles to AS 3958 with minimum 90% adhesive back-butter coverage
- Slip-resistant tiles meeting AS 4586 ratings (P3/R10 minimum for general outdoor, P4/R11 with Class B barefoot rating for pool surrounds)
- Flexible polymer-modified adhesive rated for extreme thermal cycling
- Cutting at edges, steps, and around drainage points
- Movement joints at 4.5m maximum intervals (critical in Perth's temperature extremes)
- Salt-resistant grouting where applicable (epoxy or polymer-modified)
- Cleanup and waste disposal
Materials (tiles, adhesive, grout, sealant for natural stone) account for 40–50% of the cost. Labour makes up the rest, scaling with area size, substrate preparation, pool compliance, and salt-resistance specification.
What Affects the Cost
- Area size. Perth outdoor entertaining areas are generous by Australian standards. A standard alfresco of 30–50m2 is common, and adding a pool surround pushes total tiled area to 60–100m2 or more. Labour rates drop on larger areas: expect $50–$85/m2 for a standard patio, $85–$150/m2 for pool surrounds.
- Pool surround compliance. Perth has one of the highest pool ownership rates in Australia. Pool surround tiles must meet P4/R11 slip resistance with a Class B barefoot classification under AS 4586. Saltwater pools (very common in Perth) also need salt-resistant grout. The combination of slip, heat, and salt requirements makes pool tiling Perth's most specification-intensive outdoor job.
- Tile surface temperature. In Perth's 40-degree-plus summer days, dark tiles in direct sun can reach over 70 degrees Celsius. Light-coloured porcelain pavers in cream, sand, or light grey ($40–$110/m2 supply) stay significantly cooler. Some tile manufacturers publish surface temperature data for their ranges. Ask about this when choosing tiles for sun-exposed areas.
- Salt resistance. Coastal suburbs from Hillarys to Fremantle are exposed to salt-laden sea air. Homes with saltwater chlorinators (the dominant pool type in Perth) also expose surround tiles to salt splash. Standard cement grout breaks down from salt crystallisation within two to three years. Epoxy or polymer-modified grout costs more upfront but eliminates the need for re-grouting.
- Slab condition. Perth's sandy Bassendean and Spearwood soils produce stable concrete slabs that rarely crack or shift. Levelling is still often needed, but major slab correction is uncommon. This keeps preparation costs lower than in reactive clay areas found in parts of Melbourne and Adelaide.
- Steps and coping. Pool coping, patio steps, and level changes add cutting and finishing time. Bullnose or capping tiles for step edges add $15–$30 per lineal metre.
A small covered patio retile in a Baldivis home with light porcelain pavers on a stable slab sits toward $1,900. A large pool surround and entertaining area in a Dalkeith home with travertine, salt-rated epoxy grout, slab correction, steps, pool coping, and waterproofing coordination pushes toward $11,400.
Perth-Specific Considerations
Perth's extreme summer heat, coastal salt exposure, and outdoor culture create specification requirements that go well beyond what southern cities need to consider. The good news is that Perth's stable sandy soils make the substrate side of outdoor tiling more straightforward than most capitals.
Tile surface temperature is a safety issue. This is Perth's single most important outdoor tiling factor. In January and February, exposed concrete and dark-coloured tiles can reach 70 degrees Celsius or more in direct afternoon sun. That is hot enough to cause burns on bare feet within seconds. Light-coloured porcelain pavers (cream, sand, light grey) stay measurably cooler. For pool surrounds where people walk barefoot, tile colour is a functional safety decision. If you are comparing tile samples, ask the supplier whether surface temperature data is available for the range.
Salt exposure along the coast and around pools. Perth's coastal suburbs from Hillarys through Scarborough, Cottesloe, and down to Fremantle are exposed to salt-laden sea air that penetrates grout pores. Combined with the dominance of saltwater chlorinator pools across Perth, salt resistance is a specification requirement for a large proportion of outdoor tiling jobs in the metro area. Epoxy grout handles salt exposure without degradation. When getting quotes, ask specifically what grout type the tiler plans to use and whether it is rated for salt environments.
Stable sandy foundations. Perth's Bassendean sand and Spearwood dune system produce concrete slabs that are naturally stable. Cracking and shifting from soil movement is rare. Slabs tend to maintain their original drainage fall over time. This is a genuine cost advantage for outdoor tiling in Perth: less preparation work means lower total project costs compared to cities where reactive clay causes slab movement (parts of Adelaide, Melbourne, and western Sydney).
Large entertaining areas in the western suburbs. Dalkeith, Nedlands, Peppermint Grove, and Mosman Park. Perth's premium western suburbs have some of the largest residential outdoor entertaining areas in any Australian capital. Total tiled areas of 60–100m2 (pool surround plus alfresco) are common. These large jobs attract better per-square-metre rates and justify premium tile selections. Natural stone, particularly travertine ($49–$120/m2) and granite ($60–$150/m2), is popular in these suburbs for its premium look. Both need sealing every one to two years at $5–$15/m2.
Growth corridor entertaining. Baldivis, Ellenbrook, Butler, and Byford. Large alfresco areas on new concrete slabs with good condition and correct fall. These are straightforward jobs that sit toward the lower end of the range. Porcelain pavers in light colours are the standard choice here, balancing durability, slip resistance, and heat management. Decking is a popular alternative surface in these suburbs if you prefer a warmer, softer feel underfoot.
Thermal expansion joints. Perth's temperature range (40-degree-plus days followed by 15-degree nights) causes more thermal expansion and contraction in outdoor tiles than temperate climates. Movement joints at 4.5m intervals per AS 3958 are the minimum. Your tiler should discuss joint placement before starting and may recommend closer spacing for large sun-exposed areas.
Hiring a Licensed Tiler in WA
In WA, tiling falls under general builder registration administered by Building and Energy (DEMIRS). Larger outdoor tiling jobs that exceed the building work threshold require registration. You can search the DEMIRS register to verify credentials.
Before hiring:
- Check builder registration where applicable
- Ask for the AS 4586 slip rating and barefoot classification of the recommended tiles
- For pool work, confirm experience with pool surround tiling, salt-resistant grout, and coordination with pool builders
- Ask about tile surface temperature for sun-exposed areas and whether they recommend light colours
Worth checking:
- A good tiler will recommend light-coloured tiles for uncovered areas and explain the heat safety reasoning
- They will specify salt-resistant grout for coastal properties and saltwater pool surrounds
- They will discuss movement joint placement before starting, not after tiles are down
- For pool areas, they will confirm both the P4/R11 slip rating and Class B barefoot classification
How We Calculate
Estimates are based on surveyed trade rates for licensed tilers in the Perth metro area, adjusted for property type and outdoor area size. All prices include GST. Pool construction, waterproofing below the tile surface, and landscaping are separate costs.
